Betting on the Virginia Tech Hokies (16-3 Overall / 5-2 Conference)
After falling prey to the North Carolina Tar Heels in a 103-82 road loss on Jan. 21, the Hokies rebounded in one of the best way possible: By crushing the Syracuse Orange at home last Saturday, 78-56. Senior guard Justin Robinson led the way for Virginia State against the Orange, as he exploded for 35 points by going 9-for-13 from the field. All of his field goals made and attempted were from behind the arc, while also going 8-for-10 from the foul line. That kind of shooting line is akin to the Hokies’ offensive credo, as the team is eighth in the nation with 10.6 3-pointers made per game. They aren’t just prolific on their outside shooting They are also efficient, with Virginia Tech being second nationally with a 42.4 percent 3-point shooting percentage. What makes it harder for Virginia Tech to defend against is its dedication to swinging the ball around. The team is 11th in Division I ball with 17.3 assists per game.
The Hokies are 2-1 straight up (SU) and 2-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last three meeting with NC State.
Betting on the NC State Wolfpack (16-4 Overall / 4-3 Conference)
Pandemonium broke out in Raleigh last Saturday, as the Wolfpack took down the visiting Clemson Tigers, 69-67, on sophomore guard Braxton Beverly’s game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer. What follows for the Wolfpack is an incredibly challenging matchup with the Virginia Cavaliers. Regardless of that game’s result, though, the Wolfpack are going to need a win against a team like Virginia Tech. As of this writing, eight of NC State’s wins came against teams outside of KenPom’s top 250 rankings. Even if NC State loses to the Cavaliers, a win against Virginia Tech is going to be a significant boost to the Wolfpack’s March Madness resume. The Hokies are currently ninth on KenPom. Speaking of top 10s, the Wolfpack are sixth nationally in scoring with 85.3 points per game. They play fast, ranking third in the nation in field goals made per game with 31.8.
The Wolfpack are 5-3 ATS in their last eight home games against Virginia Tech.
Writer’s Prediction
Virginia Tech wins, 77-72.
