2016 Season Recap

Washington was in the position to get into the playoffs but had a tragic late season swing, failing to beat Arizona, Carolina, and New York in the last five weeks of regular season football. A win over any of those opponents would’ve clinched the Redskins a postseason spot but they failed to do just that.

In his first full season as the unquestioned starting quarterback of the Redskins, Kirk Cousins passed for 4,917 yards and posted 29 total touchdowns and 12 interceptions to lead Washington’s offense that ranked 12th in scoring offense and third in total offense. The defense didn’t look good, though. Washington was 25th and 24th against the pass and run, respectively in 2016.

Top Free Agency Needs

Obviously, the Redskins have to make a decision what to do with Cousins. Cousins’ status is a polarizing topic that’ll surely just get louder as the free agency period nears. Cousins, who is about to be a free agent, could be given a franchise tag by the Redskins. It seems stupid for the Redskins to pay top money to a quarterback that isn’t on the same level as Aaron Rodgers. Franchise tagging Cousins is a short term solution so the Redskins may look for other options elsewhere.

Apart from Cousins, the Redskins are looking to upgrade pieces on their defensive line. They are reportedly targeting Bennie Logan, currently under the Philadelphia Eagles’ payroll but is bound for free agency.

Top Draft Needs

Quarterback. Okay, they still have Kirk Cousins but what if nothing got resolved come the draft? Wait, they have Colt McCoy, though it doesn’t look like Washington is going to be satisfied knowing they have him as a fallback.

Middle Linebacker.  The middle of Washington’s defensive line needs some work, as evidenced by a pathetic job against the run last season.

Safety. DeAngelo Hall is still recovering from a season-ending injury in 2016. Even if he gets back on the field in time for the 2017 season, who know how good he could still be given his age.
