The Total Payout
There is money to be made south of the border. The WGC-Mexico Championship boasts a total purse of $9.75 million, with a hefty $1.66 million of that pot going to the eventual winner. That’s excellent news for this week’s field considering the total payout last year amounted to only $9.5 million. To put into perspective the difference in prize money, defending champion Adam Scott (+2,500) earned $1.62 million in this tournament last year. That’s $40,000 less than the amount the WGC-Mexico champion will receive this year. Finishing second in this event ain’t bad either with the runner-up receiving a cash payout of $1.045 million. This is one of the few golf tournaments wherein the second place finisher (barring no ties) still gets a seven-figure sum.
