Betting on the Seton Hall Pirates (21-10, 10-8 Big East)
Seton Hall used a 17-2 run in the second half to get past Marquette in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament on Thursday, 82-76.
Junior guard Khadeen Carrington led four other double-digit scorers for the Pirates with 19 points and went a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line, which compensated for his woeful shooting night (27.2 FG%). Fellow third-year Angel Delgado also came up huge, as he flirted with a triple-double—12 points, 16 rebounds, nine assists. That was his 13th-straight double-double and his 26th of the season.
The Pirates have now set themselves up for a tough semifinal showdown with top-seeded and second-ranked Villanova. Bluntly speaking, this should be a sure win for the Wildcats, considering how they destroyed Seton Hall in both meeting this season. But with the way the Pirates have been playing, we can expect a competitive finish.
The win over the Golden Eagles was their eight in 10 contests, and their six in the last seven games at the Big Apple—a stretch underscored by last year’s astonishing run to the conference tournament championship.
Betting on the Villanova Wildcats (29-3, 15-3 Big East)
Nova blasted its way to the semifinals with a record-setting 108-67 victory over a St. John’s side that was already contented to have reached the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament.
The Wildcats didn’t play perfect basketball, but the stats indicate they almost did. They shot 63.2 percent from the field, committed only five turnovers; shot beyond 50 percent from three and were faulted for just seven personal fouls. It was also the highest scoring effort and the biggest margin of victory play for Nova in conference tournament play.
A repeat of that historic offensive performance is unlikely against a proven group in Seton Hall—a rematch of last year’s Big East championship match. The Wildcats lost there, but that defeat will fuel them even more.
They beat the Pirates by 30 and 22 points in two meetings this season, and you can make that three in a row for Villanova as long as the offense executes efficiently, and the defense manages to prevent Angel Delgado from causing too much havoc down low.
