Betting on the Boston Red Sox (32-26)
The Boston Red Sox saw their three-game win streak come to an end in rather humiliating fashion, as they got wallopped by their long-time rivals the New York Yankees this Wednesday, 8-0.
The Red Sox are now two games behind the Yanks in the AL East standings, yet they should still be confident that their bats will get it going again rather than not. They’ve scored no less than five runs in each of their three victories during the aforementioned run and have averaged 5.85 runs scored in the seven contests prior to Wednesday’s loss.
Furthermore, Boston’s offense still ranks fourth in the majors in both team batting average (.265) and on-base percentage (.338). As such, don’t count on the team laying another egg in Thursday’s rubber match in The Bronx.
The Sox should also be in good hands with southpaw David Price (1-0, 3.00 ERA) penciled-in to start in the three-game series finale ahead. The former Cy Young Award-winner, who’s been held out of action for most of the season due to an elbow injury he suffered from spring training, appears to be on the right path to ace status once more. Price got his first win of ther year this past Saturday, throwing seven solid innings with seven strikeouts and just one run surrendered on a solo homer against another division rival in the Baltimore Orioles.
Betting on the New York Yankees (33-23)
After a couple of back-to-back one-run losses, the New York Yankees rediscovered their explosive form on Tuesday and created a little more breathing room from their lofty perch in the tightly-contested AL East standings.
In a night when breakout sensation Aaron Judge went 0-for-4 to have his nine-game hit streak snapped, a couple of his unheralded teammates led the charge en route to the blowout.
Shortstop Didi Gregorius hit a solo shot out of the park during the third inning for New York’s first score of Tuesday’s contest, further extending his own hitting streak to nine games for a total of 12 hits and seven runs. Meanwhile, first baseman Chris Carter did a ton of damage batting in the ninth spot of the team’s batting order as well, finishing with three hits and four RBIs mainly powered by a massive three-run blast in the fourth to give the Yanks a commanding lead that they wouldn’t squander.
Set to take the mound for New York on Thursday is Michael Pineda (6-3, 3.76 ERA), who’s been one of the team’s more reliable starters this season. However, the 28-year-old Dominican is coming off of a rather disappointing outing, as Pineda gave up five runs on 10 hits to the Toronto Blue Jays last Friday.
Still, the Yankees have gotten the better of their archnemesis at home of late. They’ve won five of their last six meetings against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium and with a combined score of 27-9 in those five victories.
