Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (37-37)
The Los Angeles Angels returned to winning ways Tuesday with a resounding 8-3 victory over the struggling New York Yankees. Cameron Maybin hit a tiebreaking homer off reliever Tyler Clippard in the seventh inning to lift the Angels to their second win in their last three games. The Angels will look to carry the momentum of that huge victory when they lock horns with the Yankees in an immediate rematch tonight.
Pitching for the Angels in the second game of this three-game set is Ricky Nolasco (2-8, 5.01 ERA). The right-hander will toe the rubber Wednesday, seeking to draw his first victory for LA since April 27. Nolasco has had a nightmarish season, already allowing 21 homers this campaign. With Nolasco still a big question mark at this point, the onus is on the Angels hitters to provide some much-needed runs tonight. Expected to lead the LA offense in this clash are Maybin and Albert Pujols. Maybin, who’s batting .407 in his last six games, leads the Angels in batting average (.279) and on-base percentage (.380) this season. Pujols, the Angels’ leading run producer, is 8-of-26 in his last six outings with a homer and four RBIs.
Betting on the New York Yankees (38-30)
With the Yankees in a bit of a funk right now, the pressure is on Jordan Montgomery (4-4, 3.78 ERA) to deliver a great start for New York tonight. The rookie had a rough start in Oakland last Thursday, surrendering four runs on seven hits against the A’s in just 5.2 innings of action. It’s just the third time in his 12 starts that Montgomery allowed four or more runs.
Montgomery can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the New York hitters to step up their play tonight. The Yankees have been outscored 42-28 during their seven-game losing skid. One guy who needs to contribute for the Yankees is Gary Sanchez. He’s batting .467 in his last five games for the Yankees with two homers and six RBIs. Another player who’s swinging the bat well for New York is Aaron Judge. He belted his league-best 24th homer in Tuesday’s loss to the Angels.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yankees (-185) finally end their losing rut with a gritty 6-3 victory.
