Betting on the Texas Rangers (36-37)
Pitching for the Rangers in the second game of this three-game set is Austin Bibens-Dirkx (2-0, 4.25 ERA). He didn’t factor into the decision in Texas’ 7-6 loss to Toronto on Monday, allowing five runs on five hits in five innings of action. A disastrous fourth inning wrecked ABD’s start as he surrendered four runs and four hits during that period. That meltdown was quite disappointing for Biben-Dirx who was coming off a titanic victory in his last start against star pitcher Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals.
For Biben-Dirx to return to the winner’s circle against the Bronx Bombers, he needs to improve on the command of his pitches. The 32-year-old will need to pound the strike zone, just like he did against the Nationals on June 11. He threw a masterclass in that ballgame, retiring 19 straight batters to set a Rangers rookie record for most consecutive batters retired. The last time a Texas pitcher had as many as 18 was Matt Harrison in 2008.
Betting on the New York Yankees (40-31)
On the mound for the Yankees later today is Luis Cessa (0-1, 7.36 ERA). He will be making just his second start of the year against the Rangers. Cessa is coming off a 4-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics in which he surrendered four runs in four innings. The right-hander picked up his first big league victory last June 29 against Texas with three stellar innings of one-run relief. Cessa will need more of the same later today against a Rangers side that’s tied for ninth in the majors in runs scored. New York’s pitching has been disappointing lately, with the Yankees surrendering 57 runs over their last 10 games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Rangers (+135) edge past the Yankees, 5-4.
