Coming off an effective start, Johnny Cueto looks to make back-to-back wins, as he takes care of the starting duties tonight for the Giants against Detroit.

Cueto is 6-7 with a 4.26 ERA in 17 starts this season and has just beat the Pittsburgh Pirates last Friday, giving up just three earned runs on seven hits in five innings of action. He did struggle with control, as he issued four free passes in a high 114-pitch outing.

While Cueto needs to find the strike zone better this time, that wouldn’t matter much if the Giants somehow shows the same offensive output they had in the Bucs game. Hunter Pence could help in that department, as the outfielder is 6-for-18 (.333) in his career against Detroit starter, Anibal Sanchez.

Cueto is 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in two career starts at Comerica Park.

Anibal Sanchez could use a sip Chianti after the Tigers earned a 7-4 win over the Cleveland Indians last Saturday. Although he wasn’t able to get a decision, it was the team’s first victory in six games in which Sanchez appeared in as either a starter or a reliever.

Sanchez went 6.1 frames long against the Indians, yielding three earned runs on four hits, while fanning five and walking one. A matchup against the Giants could sustain Sanchez’s good showing. After all, he is 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA in five starts against San Francisco dating back to 2010.

Sanchez will be reinforced by Detroit’s offense that hit well in June, wherein they slashed .281/.334/.475. Nick Castellanos was part of that success and he continues to do good stuff at the plate, going 8-for-20 with a homer over his last six games as of this writing.

Writer’s Prediction
