Betting on the Dallas Cowboys (1-0)
The Cowboys’ 2017 NFL campaign is off to a solid start after they thrashed the New York Giants, 19-3, in their opening game on Sunday. Jason Witten scored the game’s only touchdown for the Cowboys who improved to 9-1 all-time against the Giants in season openers. Witten made history on Sunday, becoming Dallas’ all-time leader in receiving yards in the process, passing the great Michael Irvin.
It wasn’t just Witten who excelled for the Cowboys against the Giants. Ezekiel Elliott churned out another 100-yard game two days after learning that his six-game suspension over a domestic violence case is on hold. Zeke, who rushed for 104 yards and added 36 yards on five receptions Sunday, is in line to start this coming weekend against Denver after judge Amos Mazzant III granted a preliminary injunction of his suspension.
That ruling means Elliott will be available for the entire season which is a welcome development for the Cowboys. With Zeke back on the field, Dallas’ running game will go from a unit that would have been able to produce consistent yardage to a side that will rack it up at will after finishing second in rushing DVOA last year. Elliott will have his work cut for him, however, against a Broncos side that allowed just 64 yards on the ground last Monday.
Another guy who needs to step up for Dallas in Week 2 is Dak Prescott. He was turnover-free in the win against the Giants, completing 24-of-39 passes for 268 yards and one touchdown. Prescott’s career total of four picks is the lowest mark that any quarterback has posted through his first 17 regular-season games since the AFL/NFL merger. He will look to dissect a Denver defense that allowed just 294 total yards on Monday.
The Cowboys are 6-4 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Denver Broncos (1-0)
Talk about a great escape. The Denver Broncos held off a furious fightback by the Los Angeles Chargers to record a thrilling 24-21 victory on Monday night. The game was reminiscent of Denver’s 21-20 victory over Carolina in last year’s season opener, when the Panthers missed a kick to end the game. This time around, it was Younghoe Koo who missed the game-tying field goal for the Chargers as defensive end Shelby Harris blocked his 41-yard field goal attempt.
The Broncos may have collapsed down the stretch in their season opener but there were still plenty of positives to take from Vance Joseph’s first game in charge. Denver’s defense, in particular, was superb against Los Angeles, holding the Chargers to 140 yards of offense just over four minutes into the fourth quarter. The Broncos will need to play that brand of defense the entire 60 minutes against the Cowboys who racked up 392 total yards in their win against the Giants.
Another pleasant surprise for Denver was its much-improved running game. The Broncos, who finished 27th in the NFL in rushing last season, wreaked havoc against the Chargers defensive line, recording 140 yards on the ground on Monday. That opened things up for Trevor Siemian who accounted for 238 yards and three touchdowns. The Broncos will need that same kind of balanced attack against a Dallas team that held the Giants to just 49 total yards in the first half of their season opener.
The Broncos are 7-3 SU and 6-3-1 ATS in their last 10 home games.
