Betting on the Tennessee Titans (9-7)
It’s a miracle that the Titans are able to survive this far. But after completing a 22-21 come-from-behind road win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round, they are going to need something short of a miracle again to take down the defending champions next Saturday in Foxborough.
Speaking of that, the Titans’ pass rushers could just be the miracle workers that would help them leap over New England. Against the Chiefs, Tennessee sacked Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith four times for a loss of eight yards. If the Titans could have the same success getting to Pats quarterback Tom Brady as they were with Smith, Tennessee could get extra possessions on offense. The Titans finished the regular season fifth overall with 43.0 sacks.
Another thing to watch out for the Titans is the availability of running back DeMarco Murray, Murray has not played since Week 16 with a third-degree MCL tear, but he has not been ruled out for the Pats game. Murray and Derrick Henry form a scary backfield tandem that should pose threat to New England’s mediocre defense against the run.
Betting on the New England Patriots (13-3)
The Patriots have been in the playoffs so many times, they might as well call the postseason just an extension of the regular season. But seriously, the immense advantage of the Patriots in experience alone make them a huge favorite to thwart the Tennessee’s dreams of making it past the divisional round.
While Brady has five Super Bowl rings and countless playoff wins under his belt, his counterpart in Tennessee in Mariota only has one postseason victory in his young NFL career. The gap in playoff experience between the two is just massive to say the least.
Tennessee will be also be left with the unenviable job of trying to figure out how to stop Brady and the Pats’ offense that concluded the regular season second in scoring points (28.6) and first in total offense. Brady is already 40, but he remains one of the best in the business. Just this season, he led the league in passing yards (4,577) with 32 touchdowns as against just eight interceptions. Brady is as sharp as ever.
The fact that the Pats are 9-1 SU at Gillette Stadium during divisional round games should only boost New England bettors confidence.
