Betting on the New Orleans Saints (1-1)
The Saints avoided suffering another loss as a favorite on Sunday, as they escaped with a close 21-18 win over the Cleveland Browns at home. The Saints entered the fourth quarter trailing Cleveland, 12-3, but ultimately averted disaster thanks in large part to the missed field goal by Browns kicker Zane Gonzalez late in the game. Despite the win, the Saints probably felt more relieved than anything else, as they had a hard time moving the chains. They also committed two turnovers, both on lost fumbles by wide receivers Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr. Saints quarterback Drew Brees went 28 of 35 for 243 yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions. It’s also worth noting that the Saints’ defense improved. After allowing 521 total yards to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1, they surrendered just 327 to the Browns. The Saints will have to sustain that, as they next face an Atlanta offense with plenty of weapons.
The Saints are 5-5 SU in their last 10 games in Atlanta.
Betting on the Atlanta Falcons (1-1)
After their offense was grounded in Week 1’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Falcons’ attack finally took flight on Sunday during a 31-24 win over the Carolina Panthers at home. Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 272 passing yards on 23-of-28 completions with a pair of touchdowns and an interception. His passing performance leaves much to be desired, but he can have a big game against the Saints, whose defense is yet to put up a convincing performance. Ryan also made up for his interception with a pair of rushing scores on four carries. Despite missing starting running back Devonta Freeman in Week 2 because of a knee issue, Falcons still racked up 170 rushing yards against Carolina, with Tevin Coleman, who’s good enough to be a starter for other teams, compiling 107 yards on 16 carries. Freeman is reportedly going to miss 2-3 weeks, so expect Coleman to do most of the heavy lifting in the backfield for the meantime.
The Falcons are 3-0 ATS in their last three home games.
Writer’s Prediction
