One of the most intriguing matchups this week is that between the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions this weekend, as this would mark the first head-coaching showdown between the teacher in Bill Belichick and the student in former Patriots defensive coordinator and now Lions head coach Matt Patricia.
Will Belichick show Patricia who’s the boss with a win? Or will the Lions take down the top favorites to win Super Bowl 53? The Pats are +650 to take home another Vince Lombardi Trophy at the end of this season, while the Lions are +2,800 to top the NFC North.

Betting on the New England Patriots (1-1)
It wasn’t a good day to be a Patriots fan last Sunday, as Tom Brady and crew got beat by the Jacksonville Jaguars, 31-20. New England’s defense was exposed by the Jags. Blake Bortles passed for near 400 yards with four touchdowns, as the Leo Fournette-less Jacksonville racked up 481 total yards. The Patriots, however, can do what the Jags did to them to the Lions, whose defense does not seem to have much bite. Tom Brady should be able to find a way to dissect Detroit’s stop unit that allows 30.0 points per game. If Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon, who was acquired earlier this week by the Pats via a trade with the Cleveland Browns, the Patriots have another deadly weapon downfield to join tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receivers Chris Hogan and Phillip Dorsett. Gordon should find success in the Pats’ offense that is ninth in the league with a 66.67 red zone touchdown percent rate.
The Patriots are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Detroit Lions (0-2)
After a 48-17 shellacking of a loss at the hands of the New York Jets in Week 1, the Lions suffered another defeat last Sunday, as they fell to the San Francisco 49ers on the road, 30-27. But as what the score suggests, it was quite an improvement on both ends of the field for Detroit, which will look to find gaps and holes on New England’s defense that is giving up 25.5 points and 403.0 total yards per game this season. Lions quarterback. If Bortles can light it up against New England, then so can Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who went 34 of 53 for 347 passing yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions in the loss to the Niners. For all their struggles of late, the Lions still have managed to average 383.0 total yards per game through the first two weeks of this season.
The Lions are 3-2 ATS in their last five home games.
Writer’s Prediction
