Clemson Tigers vs Syracuse Orange Predictions, Picks, Odds, and NCAA Football Betting Preview – September 14 2019

The Clemson Tigers have now opened the season with a 2-0 straight up (SU) record, and will look to win their third win in a row when they pay the Syracuse Orange a visit next Saturday. The Orange are coming off an embarrassing loss, but can make up for it if they take down the defending national champions at Carrier Dome, their first game there this season.

Betting on the Clemson Tigers (2-0 Overall / 0-0 Conference)

Forget about Trevor Lawrence’s shaky performance in last week’s season-opener. This time around, the Tigers quarterback was up and running smoothly on offense for Clemson. Lawrence threw for 268 yards and a touchdown, albeit with another interception, on 24 for 35 completions in a 24-10 home win over the Texas A$&M Aggies, who gave them fits a year ago. In the process, however, Clemson failed to cover its 16-point spread as home favorite. In any case, the Tigers passed their first true test of the season and will likely retain its status as the No. 1 team in the AP Poll. Running back Travis Etienne was held down to only 53 rushing yards after going off for over 200 last week, but he and the Tigers’ backfield could be making a killing in Syracuse, as the Orange allowed a whopping 354 rushing yards in last Saturday’s loss to the Maryland Terrapins.

Clemson is 4-1 against the spread (ATS) in its last five games.

Betting on the Syracuse Orange (1-1 Overall / 0-0 Conference)

The Orange could be on their way out of the Top 25 AP Poll after suffering a devastating and humiliating 63-20 road loss to Maryland in Week 2 of the college football season. Orange quarterback Tommy DeVito passed for 330 yards and three touchdowns and an interception while completing 28 of 39 passes, and though those numbers still look good on paper, DeVito will have to be more decisive in the pocket, especially when under pressure. To that end, he apparently needs better protection, as he was sacked four times by Terrapins defenders. The Orange got just 70 rushing yards from their backfield. That’s not going to cut it for them against Clemson, which has a defense that can quickly smell blood in the water — or in other words, quick to detect a one-dimensional offense. DeVito had both of the Orange’s two turnovers in the Terps game, as he also fumbled the ball once.

Syracuse is 3-1 ATS in its last four games.

Writer’s Prediction

Clemson wins, 37-13.
