Betting on the NC State Wolfpack (+14)
Record: 4-1 Overall / 4-1 Conference
The Wolfpack are on a roll. After suffering a loss to No. 20 Virginia Tech Hokies on Sep. 26, the Wolfpack have stitched together three wins in a row after defeating the Duke Blue Devils at home last Saturday, 31-20. However, that win came at a huge cost, as the Wolfpack will be missing starting quarterback Devin Leary for multiple weeks after he sustained a broken fibula in the Duke game. With Leary out, the Wolfpack will be leaning on junior quarterback Bailey Hockman, who stepped in when Leary left the game against Duke and completed four of seven passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. With Leary out and an unproven quarterback stepping in for him, the Wolfpack might have to turn more to their rushing attack that’s being led by Zonovan Knight and Ricky Person Jr. The two have 699 rushing yards and six rushing scores combined, so far this season. The Wolfpack are 43rd nationally with 155.6 rushing yards per contest.
NC State is 4-1 against the spread in its last five games overall.
Betting on the North Carolina Tar Heels (-14)
Record: 3-1 Overall / 3-1 Conference
North Carolina suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday when it was dealt a blow by the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee in a 31-28 loss. The loss came after a 3-0 start for the Tar Heels, including a win against the No. 19 Boston College Eagles on the road on Oct. 3. Quarterback Sam Howell passed for 374 yards and three touchdowns with an interception on 20-of-36 completions, while running back Javonte Williams recorded 119 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 18 carries. Howell and the Tar Heels’ passing game are a big threat against most teams, including the Wolfpack, who are just 11th in the ACC with 268.2 passing yards allowed per game. Last year, Howell made mincemeat out of NC State’s defense, passing for 401 yards and three touchdowns with just a single interception. Javonte Williams, who rushed for two touchdowns in that game, is also still with North Carolina, so the Tar Heels have the players who are familiar with beating NC State.
North Carolina is 6-3-1 against the spread in its last 10 games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
North Carolina wins, 44-23.
