Betting on the Marquette Golden Eagles (+5.5)
Record: 16-7 Overall/8-4 Conference
There’s a lot to be said about a team that has already defeated the Villanova Wildcats this season, a feat the Golden Eagles have just pulled off. Marquette beat the Wildcats on Feb. 2, 83-73, at home, and will come into Tuesday’s rematch against the Huskies on a lengthy rest. Marquette lost to the Huskies at home on Dec. 21, 78-70, but has since gone 8-1 straight up, a stretch that includes those two wins against Villanova, Seton Hall Pirates, and Xavier Musketeers. The offense and defense have been clicking for Marquette in Big East play. So far, the Golden Eagles are No. 1 in the conference in offensive effective field goal percentage and in opponents effective field goal percentage. Their pesky hands have resulted in a 12.3 steals percentage on defense – also the best in the Big East. Justin Lewis, the Golden Eagles’ top scorer this season, put up 20 points in the first meeting with UConn and 19 in the last game versus Villanova.
Marquette is 9-1 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Connecticut Huskies (-5.5)
Record: 15-6 Overall/6-4 Conference
Connecticut suffered another loss last Saturday, as the Huskies fell prey to Villanova on the road, 85-74. Prior to that, the Huskies lost to the Creighton Bluejays at home on Feb. 1, 59-55. The Huskies had some success against Villanova’s defense, shooting 50 percent from the field and going 8/20 from deep, but they simply didn’t have enough firepower to keep up with Jay Wright’s boys. RJ Cole impressed with 25 points, while Tyrese Martin and Adama Sanogo each put up 14 points. Cole and Martin combined for 45 points in the initial meeting with Marquette. The duo seems to know how to get around Marquette’s defense. Speaking of which, the Huskies are tough to crack at the rim. They are No. 1 in the Big East in block rate and second in the nation with 6.7 blocks per game.
The Over is 7-3 in UConn’s last 10 games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Connecticut wins, 75-70.
