Matt Ryan is now the new starting quarterback of the Colts, but Indianapolis fans shouldn’t expect to see much of him in this game against Buffalo. Rather, youngsters Sam Ehlinger and Jack Coan could be sharing most of the duties under center on Saturday, with Coan perhaps playing for his chances to make it past the final roster cuts. The Colts would also love to see rookie wide receiver Alec Pierce in action in a real competitive setting in the NFL, as they are grooming him to be one of their offense’s most dependable targets in the upcoming season. In his last year with the Cincinnati Bearcats in 2021, Pierce racked up 884 receiving yards and eight touchdown catches on 52 receptions. Apart from Pierce, tight end Jelani Woods and offensive tackle Berhard Rainmann are the other Colts rookies to focus on in this acid test versus Buffalo.
The Colts are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games away from home.
Betting on the Buffalo Bills (+8)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Bills are coming off a disappointingly early exit in last season’s NFL playoffs, where they got eliminated in the AFC Divisional Round by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. And this Saturday’s game will be the Bills’ first since that bitter loss, so regardless of how many Buffalo starters play against Indianapolis, the Bills will try to have that taste of victory again, even if it’s just in the preseason. Some intriguing names to check out on the Bills this Saturday are the likes of rookie running back James Cook, younger brother of Minnesota Vikings bell cow tailback Dalvin Cook. Devin Singletary is viewed as the top running back in Buffalo, but James Cook might have something to show in the preseason that can threaten Singletary’s throne as the team’s RB1. In 2021, the Bills were third in the NFL with 29.8 points per game and sixth with 131.2 rushing yards per contest.
The Bills are 3-0-1 against the spread in their last 4 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Bills win, 16-14.
