Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-3)
Regular Season Record: 1-1
The Saints failed to muster enough strength to beat Tom Brady in Week 2, as they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home Sunday, 20-10. The bad Jameis Winston showed up, as he went 25/40 for 236 passing yards and a touchdown, but had three interceptions. It did not help the Saints that star running back Alvin Kamara was absent with an injury. Kamara is likely to return in Week 3 though against the Panthers, which should be an easier assignment for New Orleans. Meanwhile, cornerback Marshon Lattimore might be suspended over the role he played in the fight that broke out in the Bucs game.
The Saints are 4-3 against the spread in their last seven games overall.
Betting on the Carolina Panthers (+3)
Regular Season Record: 0-2
The more games the Panthers play, the more it seems that Baker Mayfield is not the answer for their offense. After losing to the Cleveland Browns (26-24) at home in Week 1, the Panthers suffered a 19-16 defeat at the hands of the New York Giants in Week 2 on the road. Mayfield was just 14/29 for 145 passing yards (1 touchdown, 0 INT) and was sacked twice. Carolina has to open up more opportunities for running back Christian McCaffrey, who rushed for 102 yards on 15 carries, but only had 26 receiving yards on four catches and five targets. It does feel that the CMC is being underused.
The Over is 4-2 in the Panthers’ last six games away from home.
Writer’s Prediction
The Panthers win, 20-17.
