Betting on the Boise State Broncos (-9)

With the 42-25 win last Saturday against the UNLV Rebels, the Boise State Broncos keep their dreams for a Mountain West title alive heading into the final week of the regular season. The team needs to win this Friday and hope that the Wyoming Cowboys lose their final game in order to seal the conference crown.

The Broncos are certainly getting it done on offense of late as they’ve scored over 40 points in each contest amidst their current three-game win streak. Running back Jeremy McNichols is their undoubted MVP of the season, as he racked up 206 rushing yards and a whopping four touchdowns in the victory over UNLV. His stellar performance this past weekend has placed him third in the country with 1,575 rushing yards and tops in total touchdowns (26) amongst all running backs this year.

While Boise State’s running game is firing on all cylinders, the same cannot be said about its passing game. Brett Rypien, son of former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, finished last Saturday with just 109 passing yards. Then again, he already has over 3,000 passing yards, 22 TDs and a 64-percent completion rate for the season. Plus, a ton of support from his backfield is doing him good indeed.

Boise State’s no slouch on defense, either. The team has allowed just an average of 22.3 yards per game to the opposition this season, which is good for 31st in the FBS. An all-around 2016 campaign will probably get the Broncos over their hump against Air Force, whom they’ve lost to for the past two years and have gone 0-4 against the spread in their last four meetings since 2011.

Betting on the Air Force Falcons (+9)

Just as hot as Boise State are the Air Force Falcons, who won 41-38 versus the San Jose State Spartans last Saturday to extend their own winning streak to four games.

The Falcons, on the other hand, are winning with defense. Star safety Weston Steelhammer managed to pick off San Jose State twice in the previous contest, and he was also integral in the 2014 victory over Boise State with three interceptions. Steelhammer will look to lead Air Force’s imposing D again, which is ranked 19th in the nation against the run (121 rushing yards allowed per game) in hopes of containing the red-hot McNichols.

However, it’s quite ironic that the Falcons haven’t been the same through the air since starting quarterback Nate Romine went down. Romine’s backup, Arion Worthman, certainly dazzled last Saturday with 215 rushing yards and a pair of scores on 28 carries, but running the ball isn’t really up to the QB. Worthman threw the ball just six times against the Spartans and completed three passes for a meek 33-yard outing with a passing TD as well as an interception.

We can’t chalk up the Falcons’ season finale at home as a gimme win just yet, as they have a subpar 4-3 record in Falcon Stadium this season (3-4 ATS). Considering how well Boise State’s McNichols has been able to torch any all all defenses he’s faced, Air Force may as well pay a somber farewell tribute to its solid season this Friday when all is said and done.

Writer’s Prediction

The Broncos (-9) run all over the Falcons, 35-23.
