Betting on the Boise State Broncos (-13.5)
Boise State is still a perfect 7-0 (3-4 ATS) and on-course for a possible College Football Playoff berth, but the Broncos have not looked anywhere near playoff-caliber in recent weeks. They struggled at home against Colorado State, whom they beat by just five points despite being a 28-point favorite. And last week, they escaped with a 28-27 win against BYU.
Turnovers were a killer for the Broncos, as they gave the ball away five times against BYU. But they grossly outgained the Cougars, 577-322, and should be in much better shape if they cut down on the turnovers.
Broncos QB Brett Rypien should be able to move the ball fairly well through the air against Wyoming. He lit up a 119th-ranked BYU pass defense for 442 yards and three touchdowns, and will now face a Cowboys defense that ranks even worse at 123rd, sixth-worst in the FBS.
As a freshman last season, Rypien completed 22-of-28 passes for 211 and three TDs to lead the Broncos to a 34-14 win against Wyoming.
The Broncos have perennially been one of the very best Group of Five teams around, but they have not been quite as dominant in conference play. They are just 5-3 straight up and 2-6 ATS in their last eight Mountain Division games.
Betting on the Wyoming Cowboys (+13.5)
Wyoming is a program on the rise. After going 6-18 in Craig Bohl’s first two seasons, the Cowboys are 5-2 this season, and are 3-0 ATS in their last three games. They beat Colorado State – a team Boise State struggled against – by 21 points on the road, beat Air Force by nine as an 11-point road underdog, and won by eight over Nevada.
Their rushing attack has been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks. They gashed Nevada for 401 yards and five rushing touchdowns, and ran for 269 yards on the road against Colorado State. They even beat Air Force – the No. 5 rushing team in the country – at their own game as they stopped the Falcons’ triple-option offense in its tracks.
A big part of Wyoming’s recent success has also come down to winning the turnover battle. They are an impressive +6 in turnover margin during their three-game winning streak. Their chances of winning that key battle against Boise State are pretty good, too. The Broncos defense has forced just three turnovers (the fewest in the country) and the team is a -8 in turnover margin on the season.
Meanwhile, don’t discount the playoff-style atmosphere energy that will surround Laramie. This will arguably be one of the biggest home games in the program’s history, and both the crowd and the team will treat it as their Super Bowl.
Writer’s Prediction
Boise State survives a scare and wins 27-24, but Wyoming (+13.5) covers easily.
