Betting on the Boston Red Sox (32-25)

Moneyline: +102

The Red Sox got a scare in yesterday’s series-opening, 5-4 win. They went blank in the last couple of stretches and looked like they were about to blow a four-run lead before closer Craig Kimbrel stepped in. He was smooth in his 1.1 innings, as he didn’t allow a hit and was able to struck out five.

Wednesday’s starter, Rick Porcello, is hoping to perform well enough so the team can avoid such cardiac finishes. Basing it on his overall career, especially being the reigning Cy Young awardee, we can expect him to still be destructive on the mound at any given start. Also, the Yankees are just 36-for-145 (.248) against him all-time.

However, basing it solely this season, we might see another disastrous day. He’s only 3-7 with a 4.24 ERA on the year, which includes getting hammered for 30 hits in his last three.

The offense, as always, can be a headache. No one’s currently in a stretch where he is looking quite explosive, but plenty are still fairing well. Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley are batting above .320 in the last week, while Andrew Benintendi is 5-for-8 with three homers in his last two.

Betting on the New York Yankees (32-23)

Moneyline: -112

With that loss, the Yankees have now dropped 14 of their last 25 after a booming 21-9 start. They are hanging on for dear life with that division lead, which is slowly slipping through their hands.

Among the big issues is offense. It was back to looking good just last week, where they had 10 or more hits in four out of five games, but now it’s becoming lackluster again. Over their last four, they are only 31-for-137, including 51 strikeouts.

The good thing for the Bronx Bombers, however, is main hitter Aaron Judge (10-for-25) is still consistent, with Matt Holliday (10-for-29, four homers) and Aaron Hicks (13-for-27, nine RBIs) also joining in – stats are from their last six games.

CC Sabathia, meanwhile, will be back on the mound. The 16-year veteran is 6-2 with a 4.42 ERA this season, and has earned a win in each of his last four starts. His efficiency has him tallying 22 strikeouts and only 15 hits, four walks, and five runs in his last 18 innings. Additionally, the Red Sox’s batters are only hitting a mediocre .238 against him in their careers.

Writer’s Prediction

The Yankees’ (-112) hot-and-cold stretch returns to “hot” mode, and they win, 8-4.
