Betting on the Chicago White Sox (41-64)

Moneyline: +245

Chicago’s losing woes show no sign of abating as the White Sox suffered a disappointing 5-1 defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. The White Sox have now lost 16 of their last 19 outings as they dropped down to 41-64 in the AL Central standings. They now trail the division-leading Cleveland Indians by 16 games.

With the White Sox struggling mightily right now, the pressure is on Miguel Gonzalez (5-9, 4.59 ERA) to deliver a quality start for Chicago this coming Thursday. The Mexican hurler has been drawing some August trade buzz, as he’s recorded three consecutive quality starts since coming off the disabled list after the All-Star break with A/C joint inflammation in his right throwing shoulder. He has allowed just five earned runs during that span.

Gonzalez can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the White Sox’s offense to wake up from its slumber. They are sixth-worst in the majors in runs scored (454)  this season. One guy who has bucked that trend and is swinging the bat well for Chicago is second baseman Alen Hanson. He has been on fire at the plate of late, batting .438 with a homer and three RBIs in his last seven games. He went 1-of-4 last night in the loss to Toronto.

Betting on the Boston Red Sox (59-49)

Moneyline: -285

Due to Wednesday’s postponement, Rick Porcello’s start has been pushed back to Thursday against the Chicago White Sox. He struggled mightily in his last start against Kansas City, surrendering four runs on six hits in seven innings of action. The Red Sox lost that contest. 4-2. The AL East leaders have now lost each of their last four outings with Porcello as their starter. So what’s going on with the reigning AL Cy Young winner? Porcello’s command has been off this campaign with the right-hander already giving up 25 home runs this season.

As for the offense, the Red Sox are feeding off a hot Rafael Devers right now. The rookie third baseman is batting .500 in his last five games with a homer and six RBIs. Christian Vazquez has been raking as well for the Red Sox, going 10-of-17 in his last four outings with a home run and six RBIs. He hit the dramatic walkoff homer in Boston’s 12-10 win over Cleveland on Tuesday.

Writer’s Prediction

Boston (-285) wins, 6-2.
