Record: 7-1 Overall / 6-1 Conference
The Tigers streak of 28 consecutive wins in ACC play was snapped last Saturday in a 47-40 double-overtime loss to No. 4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Clemson was still missing star quarterback Trevor Lawrence in that game, but it’s not like the Tigers weren’t competitive with D.J. Uiagalelei under center. There’s no official word yet whether Lawrence will return to action this coming Saturday, but if it’s going to be Uiagalelei again, Clemson should still have all the confidence in the world that he will deliver. Against the Fighting Irish, Uiagalelei went 29-of-44 for 439 passing yards and two touchdowns without committing a single error. On the season, Uiagalelei has 883 passing yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Plus, against a mightily struggling Florida State team, Uiagalelei should be able to handle the business almost just as well as Lawrence. One Tiger who needs to show up is running back Travis Etienne, who has lost a fumble in each of the last two games and in three of the last four. He can get his confidence back against the Seminoles’ loose defense that is allowing 37.9 points per game.
Clemson is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 road games.
Betting on the Florida State Seminoles (+33.5)
Record: 2-6 Overall / 1-6 Conference
The Seminoles have questions at the quarterback position. Just when it looked like they had Jordan Travis cemented as their starter, the team started Chubba Purdy in last week’s 38-22 road loss to the NC State Wolfpack. Florida State head coach Mike Norvell said ahead of the NC State game that Purdy was dealing with an undisclosed injury, and his current status remains up in the air, as of this writing. If Travis gets sidelined again, the Seminoles will likely give Purdy another start. Purdy was not bad in the loss to NC State, as he passed for 181 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions on 15-of-23 completions. He also rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries. Norvell liked the effort of Purdy and praised the quarterback following the NC State game, so it looks like he’s okay with having the freshman under center for at least another week. Florida State’s run attack, meanwhile, is decent and can provide Purdy the help he needs in moving the chains against Clemson. The Seminoles are averaging 4.7 rushing yards per carry and 173.1 rushing yards per contest. There’s success for the Noles on the ground against Clemson’s defense that gave up 208 rushing yards to Notre Dame.
Florida State has seen the total go over in six of its last 10 games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Clemson wins, 48-14.
