Record: 22-10 Overall/12-7 Conference
Creighton put on a show Friday night to send itself to the Big East Tournament title game. The Bluejays, after downing the Marquette Golden Eagles in the quarterfinals, 74-63, demolished the No. 11 Providence Friars in the semis to the tune of an 85-58 score. The landslide victory for the Bluejays is a scary show of dominance by the team in the postseason. Creighton hit 52.6 percent of its shots from the field and was 9/23 on 3-pointers. Alex O’Connell and Arthur Kaluma scored 18 and 17 points, respectively. Leading scorer Ryan Hawkins went just 4/11 from the field for eight points but had 12 rebounds. Hawkins, who entered the game averaging 14.5 points, will look to recover against Villanova, which the Bluejays crushed at home in a 79-59 December victory. In that game, he had 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Creighton, which is hitting 40 percent of its 3-point shots in the tournament, is 6-2-2 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Villanova Wildcats (odds)
Record: 25-7 Overall/16-4 Conference
Villanova shook off the Connecticut Huskies in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament Friday night to score a 63-60 win. The Wildcats were simply more efficient on offense in the UConn game than the Huskies, as they shot 42.6 percent from the field and hit 10 3-pointers on 30 attempts. Villanova got outrebounded, 40-30, and was also outshot, 58-54, by the Huskies, but still managed to find ways to control the game to its advantage. Although they got blasted by Creighton last December, the Wildcats did even things out in January when they took down the Bluejays at home in a 75-41 victory. That’s the true Wildcats team and not the one that lost to the Bluejays, as many who’ve seen them play this season would very likely say. The Wildcats are No. 1 in the Big East in adjusted offensive efficiency and second in adjusted defensive efficiency. Jay Wright is used to coaching big games like this one on Sunday. Expect the Wildcats, who are 4-4-2 against the spread in their last 10 games, to come in ready.
