Betting on the Detroit Lions (odds)

Regular Season Record: 0-1

Jared Goff’s first taste of the quarterback role for the Lions in a competitive setting did not start well, but he was able to recover towards the end of his stint on the field in a 16-15 loss to the Buffalo Bills at home in Week 1 of the preseason. Goff took a sack early but finished with 56 yards on 7-of-9 pass completions. The offensive line has to get better for Detroit. The Lions allowed four sacks to the Bills for a loss of 29 yards. It did better in pass-blocking, though, with the Lions racking up 107 rushing yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. Still, the passing attack of the Lions needs to be more effective in order to open up the Steelers’ tough defense. Speaking of which, Detroit will head to Heinz Field after limiting Buffalo down to just 3.9 yards per carry.

The over is 4-1 in the Lions’ last five road preseason games.

Betting on the Pittsburgh Steelers (odds)

Regular Season Record: 2-0

The Steelers’ offense finally woke up. After scoring just three points in the win over the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame game, the Steelers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in Week 1 to the tune of a 24-16 score. Dwayne Haskins showed up against the Eagles, as he went 16 of 22 for 161 passing yards and a touchdown. There seems to be more stability in the depth of the quarterback position in Pittsburgh than the Lions, so expect better play from under center for the Steelers than Detroit. Not to mention that the Lions’ pass rush did not look productive in Week 1. Mason Rudolph finished the Eagles game with 77 passing yards on 8-of-9 completions, while the Steelers’ offensive line allowed just one sack.  The defense is holding up well for the Steelers, even with the departure of Vince Williams (retirement). Devin Bush and Robert Spillane will continue to lead the way as the starting inside linebackers.

The Steelers are 4-1 against the spread in their last five preseason games.
