Detroit Lions vs San Francisco 49ers Predictions, Picks, Odds and Betting Preview – NFL Week 2 – September 16 2018

The Detroit Lions were punched in the mouth by the New York Jets in Week 1. They were simply overmatched. The good thing for them though is that they have plenty of time to recover. The San Francisco 49ers, meanwhile, are also coming off a loss. Both teams will look to avoid falling down to a 0-2 hole to start the season, when they lock horns in Santa Clara this coming Sunday.

Betting on the Detroit Lions (0-1 Record)

If we are not to sugarcoat the way Detroit played last week, it’s just apt to call the Lions garbage. A hot, steaming pile one. The Lions were utterly destroyed on both ends of the field in a 48-17 loss to the New York Jets at home in Week 1. Quarterback Matthew Stafford passed for 286 yards and a touchdown, but had four interceptions. Backup quarterback Matt Cassel had a brief appearance but made sure he’ll be a butt of jokes at the end of the day after going 2-of-6 with an interception. Jets players said they easily read what the Lions were trying to do on offense, so there’s a big burden on Detroit offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter to be a little more creative on his play calling from the sidelines. Detroit pass rusher Ziggy Ansah exited the Jets game with a shoulder injury and did not return to play, but reportedly practiced on Thursday, so he’s probably ready to take the field on Sunday.

The Lions are 3-2 ATS in their last five road games.

Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (0-1 Record)

San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t have a nice start to the season, as he passed for 261 yards with just a passing touchdown to go with three interceptions in a 24-16 road loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week. Garoppolo also didn’t get much support from San Francisco’s backfield, which coughed up just 90 yards. Running backs Matt Breida and Alfred Morris will continue to be in a timeshare in the backfield to cover the void left by Jerick McKinnon. Breida had 46 rushing yards on 11 carries while Morris had 38 rushing yards on 12 attempts. The Niners might have to rely more on the running back tandem against the Lions, San Francisco could roll this Sunday with a thinner wide receiving corps. Wideout Marquise Goodwin is nursing a quad injury and has not practiced yet this week. On defense, cornerback Richard Sherman will look to limit the options downfield of Stafford, who could be a little conservative after getting intercepted four times against the Jets.

The 49ers are 3-1 SU in their last four home games.

Writer’s Prediction

Detroit wins, 26-21.
