Betting on the Golden State Warriors (TBA)
Make that four-straight victories now for the Golden State Warriors, who actually found it tough to dispose the Utah Jazz on Thursday, 106-99. The Warriors needed to snap out of their complacency late in that contest as they nearly squandered a 25-point lead in the first half to a Jazz team that rolled out a lineup without four of its five ailing starters.
Nevertheless, Golden State clamped down on the victory late to become the first team in the league this season to reach 20 wins. It got just the right amount of production from its main guys, with Kevin Durant finishing with a double-double (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Stephen Curry leading the way with 26 points. Draymond Green had another fantastic outing as well by nearly securing his 15th-career triple-double with 13 points, 10 boards and eight assists.
The Warriors don’t appear to be fazed by their current road trip, but will need to close out the Grizzlies with more immediacy this Saturday to prevent another possible upset from happening. With an NBA-best average of 120 points scored per contest this season – about eight more points than the next team behind them – it’s safe to say that their relatively underwhelming effort on Thursday was a mere case of undermining their opposition.
The trip to Memphis is Golden State’s third stop of a five-game road swing, yet the Dubs should still be brimming with confidence entering this weekend’s showdown. The Dubs have won six-consecutive meetings over the Grizzlies (6-1 ATS), and there’s no sign whatsoever that they’re slowing down from tearing the league apart just yet.
Betting on the Memphis Grizzlies (TBA)
In quite similar fashion to the Warriors, the Memphis Grizzlies went down the wire with the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday before sealing their fifth-straight win, 88-86.
You really have to hand it to the scrappy Grizzlies, who have gone a perfect 6-0 this season thus far in the second game of back-to-back contests. Star center Marc Gasol had another stellar performance despite dealing with a minor groin injury heading into Wednesday’s match, as he scored a game-high 36 points to go with nine rebounds.
What’s more impressive, though, is that Gasol made four of his six three-point attempts that evening. He’s shooting a sizzling 42.3 percent from beyond the arc this season, and now has four games with three or more shots made from deep.
But while backup power forward JaMychal Green had a solid night crashing the glass with a career-high 18 boards, Memphis still has an uphill battle ahead with the Warriors considering that starters Mike Conley (back) and Chandler Parsons (knee) are far from returning to action. The Grizzlies are just 20th in the NBA with 43 rebounds per game, and they’ll need every second-chance opportunity against Golden State to keep up with the lack of firepower at hand.
Then again, the Grizz should still like their odds against the travelling Dubs. They’ll be wrapping up their three-game homestand with four-straight wins in the FedExForum (3-1 ATS), where they’ve held opponents to just 98.4 points per game on 43.7-percent field-goal shooting this season.
Writer’s Prediction
The Warriors escape with a narrow 108-103 victory in Tennessee.
