Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (-8.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-0
The addition of rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to Kansas City seems unfair, given that the Chiefs already has a lethal offense with Patrick Mahomes at the helm. And it certainly looked unfair when Edwards-Helaire rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in last week’s 34-20 home win over the Houston Texans. Mahomes, meanwhile, passed for 211 yards and three touchdowns without an interception on 24-of-32 completions. The Chargers are not just going to face this coming Sunday an inexperienced quarterback with a questionable supporting cast like they did in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but a Super Bowl-winning team with a former MVP calling the plays on the field. It would be a surprise if Mahomes will not be able to move the chains with relative ease against the Chargers.
The Chiefs are 6-4 against the spread in their last 10 games away from Arrowhead Stadium.
Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (+8.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-0
It wasn’t sexy, but the Chargers got the job done last week in their 16-13 road win against Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Tyrod Taylor went 16-of-30 for 208 passing yards with no touchdowns, while rookie running back Joshua Kelley provided the only touchdown for the team along with 60 rushing yards on 12 carries. It’s a bit surprising to see that the Chargers targeted Austin Ekeler just once in Week 1, but he could be more involved in the passing game against the Chiefs, with Los Angeles looking to improve on their offense. Ekeler had 108 receiving yards on eight catches in a home loss to the Chiefs last season. Joey Bosa is also going to try to make his presence felt by Kansas City’s offensive line. Last year, he had a total of four quarterback hits in two games against the Chiefs.
The under is 2-1 in the Chargers’ last three games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chiefs win, 28-17.
