Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (+2.5)
How much more Case Keenum can the Rams take before they realize that it may be the time to wet Jared Goff’s feet?
The Rams’ offense has simply been anemic with Keenum under center, something that was further illuminated by the team’s scoreless streak that went over 102 minutes dating back to their London loss against the Giants in Week 7. The drought only ended when Greg Zuerlein scored a field goal in the fourth quarter of a 13-10 loss to Carolina on Sunday. The Rams are 30th both in scoring offense (17.1 points per game) and in total offense (307.6 total yards per game).
If there’s any silver lining to be had for the Rams heading into the matchup with New York, however, it’s that their pass rush flashed some serious fangs against Carolina, as they sacked Cam Newton five times. That could be a prelude for what’s to come in the upcoming game against the Jets, whose offensive line ranks among the worst in the league in terms of quarterback protection, having allowed 20 sacks on the season.
The under is 8-2 in the Rams’ last 10 road games.
Betting on the New York Jets (-2.5)
Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn’t need his Harvard education to figure out that his time as the Jets’ starting quarterback is in big peril. That’s after Fitzpatrick laid out another poor performance in a 27-23 road loss to Miami on Sunday, when the quarterback passed for 193 yards and a touchdown to go with two interceptions.
Fitzpatrick’s apparent inability to move the offense down the field efficiently is the biggest reason why the Jets might just give the reins to backup Bryce Petty moving forward. Of course, the knee injury that briefly took out Fitzpatrick in the Miami game is another factor in the team’s looming decision at the quarterback position. In any case, the Jets should get the ball to Brandon Marshall, who remains the team’s main downfield threat.
It’s not going to be easy for Marshall to get away from the Rams’ defense that has allowed just 11 receiving touchdowns on the season. That said, the likes of Quincy Enunwa and Jalin Marshall could see a bump in production this coming Sunday, considering that LA is ranked just 29th in DVOA as of Week 8 in terms of defending against No. 2 receivers.
With the possibility of Petty (or even Christian Hackenberg) replacing Fitzpatrick, the Jets might turn more to its running game. The Rams’ defense isn’t that strong against the run so expect Matt Forte to have quite a workload in the game. Forte tops the team with 542 rushing yards with six touchdowns.
The Jets are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six home games.
