Betting on the Marquette Golden Eagles (10-4)

Recent history sort of favors Marquette here. The Golden Eagles rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat the top-ranked Wildcats 74-72 back on January 24 of 2017, in Milwaukee. On the game, Mikal Bridges scored 20 points.

While Villanova lost their game against Butler this week, Marquette had a better showing against Providence on Wednesday. Markus Howard hit 11 three-pointers on they way to match a Big East record with 52 points. The Golden Eagles have now won six of seven and are feeling momentum swing to their side. Howard is now 12th in the nation and leads the Big East in scoring with 22.6 points per game. He is getting help too, with Andrew Rowsey adding 22-points per game, which makes Marquette the only team with two players in the Top 20 in scoring.

Betting on the Villanova Wildcats (13-1)

The Wildcats (13-1 and 1-1 Big East) experienced their first loss of the 2017-18 college basketball season as they dropped 101-93 at Butler. They get to host the 10-4 Marquette Golden Eagles this week, before facing Xavier on January 10.

In the loss to Butler, the Wildcats were outrebounded 37-26, and they shot 34.3 percent from beyond the arc. Those stats indicate a clear recipe for losing, and you’re better believe that head coach Jay Wright is well aware of this fact, keeping his Wildcats grounded and necessarily humble as they prepare for things to heat up in the Big East at this important point in the season. They have the defensive prowess to limit the scoring potential of the Golden Eagles two stars, they just have to rebound and keep their own shooting percentage on point.

Writer’s Prediction

Villanova received the wake up call in time, before they got too cocky. They will bounce back at home as they face the 10-4 Marquette, even though the Golden Eagles have a very lethal scoring pair with Markus Howard and Andrew Rowsey on the court. Pick: Villanova to win, but no cover.
