Betting on the NC State Wolfpack (20-8 Overall / 8-7 Conference)
The Wolfpack beat the Boston College Eagles and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in their last two games, then added another feather in their cap against Georgia Tech on Wednesday. The wins aren’t exactly impressive feats given the fact that none of these opponents rank outside of the KenPom’s top 105. Still, the victories pushed NC State above .500 in conference play. Up next for them is a much tougher challenge with a date in Tallahassee with the No. 16 Florida State, which is 17th on KenPom. The Wolfpack’s offense has performed well of late, partly because of the low quality of their last two opponents, as they have averaged 87.0 in their last three games – the 10th best mark in the nation over that span. The Wolfpack like to play fast and push the action, as evidenced by their eighth-ranked average of 64.3 field goal attempts per game. Look for them to start fire early with their offense against the ‘Noles. NC State is 11th in Division I basketball with 39.5 first-half points per game.
On the road so far this season NC State is 5-5 straight up (SU) and 6-3 against the spread (ATS).
Betting on the Florida State Seminoles (22-6 Overall / 10-5 Conference)
The No. 8 North Carolina Tar Heels were too much to handle for the Seminoles, who fell prey to Roy Williams’ squad last Saturday in Chapel Hill, 77-59. That loss put an end to Florida State’s impressive eight-game winning streak that included wins over the likes of the Clemson Tigers, then No. 16 Louisville Cardinals, and the Syracuse Orange. The Noles’ offense went awry against North Carolina, shooting just 30.5 percent from the field. They hit 10 3-pointers but needed 31 attempts from deep for a 32.3 percent clip.
The Seminoles got back into the win column against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Monday, with a 68-61 victory modestly led by Freshman Devin Vassell who scored a team high 13 points. They will have to put up some bigger numbers before taking on the Wolfpack this Saturday. They should have more success in that capacity, against an NC State defense that only ranks 10th in the ACC in defensive efficiency. On the flip side, Florida State’s defense is 72nd in the nation with 67.9 points allowed per game. The Seminoles like to force turnovers. They are averaging 7.6 steals per game while their opponents commit 15.3 turnovers per contest.
Florida State is 5-3 SU and 5-4 ATS when playing at home so far this season, and is 11-9-1 ATS after a win.
Writer’s Prediction
Florida State wins, 79-72.
