Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-4)
Regular Season Record: 8-8
More stable under center with Taysom Hill starting again, the Saints were able to outlast the Carolina Panthers at home in Week 16, 18-10. Hill went 17/28 for 222 passing yards and a touchdown and zero interceptions. He also led the Saints with 45 rushing yards on 12 carries. Hill is expected to make the regular-season finale start for the Saints in Week 18. He appeared in the Saints, 27-25 home loss to Atlanta earlier this season, but only tossed two passes, as it was Trevor Siemian who made the start in that game. Alvin Kamara will look to make a bigger impact this time around. The running back led the Saints on the ground with 50 rushing yards and a touchdown and downfield with 54 receiving yards on four receptions in the loss to Atlanta. Atlanta got severely gashed on the ground by the Buffalo Bills last Sunday, so that’s something to make Hill and Kamara feel excited about.
The Saints are 3-1 against the spread in their last four road games.
Betting on the Atlanta Falcons (+4)
Regular Season Record: 7-9
Atlanta’s alternating win-loss trend continues. After beating the Detroit Lions in Week 16 at home, the Falcons got taken down by the Buffalo Bills on the road in Week 17, 29-15. As mentioned earlier, the Falcons’ run defense got abused mightily by the Bills, who rushed for 233 yards and four touchdowns on 44 carries. But while the Saints have Hill and Kamara, they don’t have Buffalo’s firepower, so Atlanta should still be in better shape on defense in Week 18 than in Week 17. Matt Ryan looked solid against the Saints in the first meeting with them, tossing for 343 yards and two touchdowns without an interception on 23/30 completions. He’s going to need his offensive line to be more effective, though, after he got sacked five times for a loss of 28 yards against the Bills.
The under is 4-0 in the Falcons’ last four home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Saints win, 23-20.
