Betting on the New York Jets (+16.5)
New York’s losing woes show no sign of abating as the Jets crashed to their fifth defeat in their last six outings with a harrowing 34-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Saturday. They simply had no answer for Matt Moore who threw for 236 yards and four touchdowns. It was another disappointing result for the Jets who have lost as many games this season (10) as they won in 2015.
Things are bound to get tougher for the Jets as standing in their way this coming Saturday are the red-hot New England Patriots. The Jets have lost each of their last five road games against the Pats. New York’s away form this season has been alarming as well, going just 3-4 on their travels this campaign. To make matters worse for the Jets, quarterback Bryce Petty may miss out on this game after sustaining a chest injury in Saturday’s loss to the Dolphins. Petty got beat up by Miami’s formidable defensive line as he was sacked a whopping three times. He completed 20 of 36 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in that contest.
If Petty is indeed ruled out for this weekend clash, look for Todd Bowles to go with the experienced Ryan Fitzpatrick. His numbers this season have been underwhelming to say the least, recording 56.8 percent completions, 10 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and a 69.1 rating in 12 games (10 starts). The Jets will need to be at their best against a New England defense that’s allowing just 336.0 total yards per game this season, 10th-fewest in the NFL.
The Jets are 3-4 ATS on the road this season.
Betting on the New England Patriots (-16.5)
The New England Patriots will head to their showdown with the New York Jets with momentum on their side after beating the Denver Broncos, 16-3, on Sunday. It was a morale-boosting victory for the Pats who extended their winning streak to four games. With the win, New England not only clinched a record eighth consecutive division title but also nabbed a first-round bye in the upcoming playoffs.
Leading the way for the Patriots in their Week 15 victory was Dion Lewis. He ran for 95 yards on 18 carries in the win against the Broncos. LeGarrette Blount also joined the New England party, nabbing his 15th rushing touchdown in this contest, a single-season franchise record. The Patriots, for that matter, had a field day against Denver’s front seven, rushing for 136 yards on 39 carries. With Tom Brady having an off-day (missing his first six passes for just the second time his career), New England’s ground game happily picked up the slack.
Also taking center stage for New England in this gritty victory was its incredible defense. The Patriots held the Broncos to just three points on Sunday, their lowest output this season. The Pats are tops in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing a measly 16.6 points per game this season. They will be licking their chops at the prospect of facing a Jets team that’s averaging just 17.3 points per game this season, third-lowest in the NFL.
The Patriots are 5-2 ATS at home this season.
Writer’s Prediction
The Patriots (-16.5) destroy the Jets, 42-17.
