Betting on the New York Yankees (8-14)

New York’s losing woes show no sign of abating as the Yankees suffered a humiliating 8-0 defeat to Boston on Saturday night. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the 27-time world champions who dropped down to 8-14 in the AL East standings.

With the Yankees struggling mightily right now, the pressure is on Nathan Eovaldi (1-2, 4.38 ERA) to deliver a solid start for the Bronx Bombers tonight. The hard-throwing righty earned his first win this season in his last start, throwing seven shutout innings against the Texas Rangers on Monday. He surrendered just two hits and two walks and struck out six batters in that 3-1 victory.

Eovaldi can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Yankees’ hitters to contribute on the offensive end as well tonight. Expected to lead New York in that department are Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann. Ellsbury is 21-of-63 (.333) lifetime against Boston starter David Price with one homer and four RBIs. McCann, on the other hand, is 10-of-29 (.345) in his career against Price with three homers and seven RBIs. He went 2-for-3 last night in the blowout loss to the Red Sox.

The Yankees are 6-4 in their last 10 road games against the Red Sox. They are pegged at +1,400 to win the American League pennant this year.

Betting on the Boston Red Sox (14-10)

The Boston Red Sox extended their winning streak to two games with an emphatic eight-run win over the New York Yankees on Saturday. Rick Porcello delivered seven scoreless innings for the Red Sox, who will look to complete the three-game sweep later tonight.

Pitching for the Red Sox this evening is left-hander David Price. This will be his first taste of MLB’s fiercest rivalry. He has had an uneven start to his Boston career, posting a 5.76 ERA (2.44 FIP) through 29.2 innings pitched. Price, who’s coming off a 14-strikeout gem against the Atlanta Braves, currently has a career high strikeout rate of 35.4 percent and a career low ground ball rate of 36.1 percent.

The lefty ace is 13-7 with a 4.06 ERA against the Yankees. That’s well below Price’s 3.02 ERA in his 188 starts against other teams. He has managed 10 strikeouts in a start against the Bronx Bombers just once, and he has never thrown a complete game against Boston’s arch-rivals.

That being said, the Red Sox are poised to complete the series sweep tonight because of the way they’re swinging the bat right now. The Red Sox have scored a whopping 35 runs over their last five games, going 4-1 during that span. Expected to lead the Red Sox offense in this series finale are Jackie Bradley Jr. and David Ortiz. Bradley has 10 hits in his last 27 at-bats, including a double and two triples in Saturday’s mauling of the Yankees. Ortiz, on the other hand, is starting to find his stroke, hitting two homers in his last two games.

The Red Sox are 4-2 in their last six home games. They are priced at +1,200 to win the World Series this year.

Writer’s Prediction
