Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (1-0)
Well, the 49ers showed their defense has serious bite. They opened up the season chewing out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road for a 31-17 victory last Sunday. San Francisco had four takeaways in that game, including the three interceptions it had off of Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston. The 49ers also forced their way into the Bucs’ pocket for three sacks, resulting in 20 lost yards for Tampa Bay. That kind of pass rush bodes well for the Niners, who will be taking on the Bengals’ offensive line that didn’t do a good job in Week 1 of preventing Andy Dalton from getting lit up in the pocket. The offense is a bigger concern for the 49ers, as quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo shakiness in the preseason has spilled over into the regular season. He went 18 of 27 for 166 yards and had a TD against an interception that was returned for a score in the Bucs game. San Francisco, however, may have to rely more on their passing attack more with two of their running backs (Tevin Coleman, Matt Breida) both questionable for Week 2 as of this writing due to injuries sustained in Week 1.
The over is 6-4 in the 49ers’ last 10 road games.
Betting on the Cincinnati Bengals (0-1)
Not much is expected of the Bengals this season, but they showed signs of life last Sunday despite a 21-20 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Up against Seattle’s stout defense, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton threw for 418 passing yards on 35 of 51 completions. Dalton got plenty of help from John Ross, whose breakout season may have finally arrived. The former first-round pick exploded for a career-high 158 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions. With A.J. Green out, Ross took advantage of the uptick in opportunities downfield and burned Seattle’s secondary. Ross’ huge game came also at a time when the Bengals did not have much going in their ground attack, mostly due to Joe Mixon exiting the game after sustaining an ankle injury. Hopefully for the Bengals, Mixon will be ready for action in Week 2 to give the Bengals’ offense more dynamism. In case he’ll need to sit out the 49ers game, Giovanni Bernard, who had 21 rushing yards on seven carries in Week 1 will likely be the starting running back temporarily.
The Bengals are 4-0 against the spread (ATS) in their last four games.
Writer’s Prediction
The 49ers win, 23-21.
