Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (+2.5)

Sure, the 49ers had a thrilling come-from-behind 24-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys last week. Sure, it was (again) against their rivals, But the victory came at a hefty price for San Francisco, which saw a number of its players, including some who are expected to be starters go down to different injuries. Tight end George Kittle hurt his shoulder, linebacker Malcolm Smith injured his hamstring, and running back Matt Breida sustained a shoulder issue in the Dallas game. Regardless of the full extent of those injuries, expect the 49ers to sit those players against the Texans than risk them aggravating their situations in a meaningless contest.

The 49ers are 4-2 ATS in their last six preseason games.

Betting on the Houston Texans (-2.5)

Although he spent just a short time on the field last week, Deshaun Watson gave Texans fans plenty to cheer about, as the sight of him up and running on the field gives them a tremendous amount of optimism for the upcoming season. Watson played in only a series and completed his only pass for four yards in a 17-10 win in Week 1 of the preseason over the Kansas City Chiefs. He left most of the quarterbacking duties to the pair of Brandon Weeded and Joe Webb, who had 97 and 56 passing yards, respectively. Weeden in particular impressed in orchestrating the team’s offense on the field, which also shows why he’s in the lead to win the No. 2 role behind Watson. Over on the other end of the field, rookie linebacker put up a solid outing, too, by helping prevent Kansas City’s offense from taking off. He did not have a sack, but racked up a game-high three quarterback hits.

Houston is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 preseason games overall.

Writer’s Prediction

Houston wins 21-17.
