Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (+9.5)
Regular Season Record: 4-5
The season is simply not going well for the banged-up 49ers team that is coming off a 34-17 home loss to the Green Bay Packers last week. Prior to that, San Francisco fell prey to the Seattle Seahawks on the road, 37-27. There’s just so many hurt bodies in San Francisco, and that’s causing the 49ers to bog down. Jimmy Garoppolo, Raheem Mostert, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, and Kendrick Bourne are all deemed either questionable of out for Week 10’s matchup against the Saints. However, quarterback Nick Mullens and wide receiver Richie James should be able to give a glimmer of hope for the 49ers in the upcoming Saints game, especially the latter. James had his breakout game in Week 9, when he rushed for 184 yards and a touchdown on just nine receptions against the Packers. Even if that’s just a fluke, the Saints will still have to put extra focus on James, which should open things up for the likes of Ross Dewelly and whoever is left on the 49ers receiving corps. Also, the Saints are not great in covering when they’re favored by at least seven points at home. In fact, the Saints are 0-3 against the spread in their last three games at home in which they’re the favorite by a touchdown or more.
As for the 49ers, they are 7-2 against the spread in their last nine road games.
Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-9.5)
Regular Season Record: 5-2
The Saints are now on a five-game winning streak after taking down Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 9 on the road, 38-3. What was expected to be an entertaining back-and-forth battle between the Saints and the Bucs turned out to be a blowout in New Orleans’ favor, thanks in large part to the Saints’ defense. Brady got intercepted three times and was sacked just as many for a loss of 23 yards. Getting behind early, the Bucs almost exclusively passed the ball, rushing the ball just five times for a measly total of eight yards. That could be the case in Week 10 against the 49ers, who, aside from having a thin backfield due to injuries, may be forced to throw the ball because Drew Brees and New Orleans’ offense could dominate right out of the gate. The Saints are fourth in the league in scoring with 30.5 points per game and ninth with 390.1 total yards per contest. And up against San Francisco’s injury-ridden offense, the Saints’ defense should be able to make quick stops. Remember that the Saints are now No. 1 in DVOA or Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, per Football Outsiders.
The over is 8-2 in the Saints’ last 10 games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Saints win, 30-17.
