Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (23-20)
After losing the first game of their three-game set, the St. Louis Cardinals answered back with a big 6-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. It was a much-needed win for the Cards, who had lost five of their previous six games coming into the game.
Mike Leake pitched eight terrific innings of one-run ball to get the win. Jedd Gyorko was 3-of-4 with two runs scored and hit a single which eventually scored two runs after a fielding error. Meanwhile, Yadier Molina and Kolten Wong each picked up two RBI.
Michael Wacha will now take the mound as the Cards look to make it two wins in a row. Wacha, who is being eased into the rotation after coming off Tommy John surgery, was once again held out for an extended rest from his most recent start on May 19.
He had had 11 days in between starts then, and he proceeded to pitch the best game of his season to date. He gave up no runs and just four hits in six innings in a no-decision loss to the Giants. That performance dropped Wacha’s ERA to 2.74 (5th in the NL) and kept up his streak of pitching at least six innings in all seven of his starts this season.
Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (27-20)
The Dodgers’ offense (6th in the NL in runs this season) has been unusually quiet so far this series. They’ve scored just three runs on seven hits over the first two games. The offense has fallen back down to earth after going five games in a row with six or more runs scored.
That’s not exactly the most promising news for Dodgers pitcher Kenta Maeda, who’s scheduled to make his first start since coming off the disabled list.
Maeda was sent to the DL due to hamstring tightness after a terrific start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 10. The Japanese righty went 8.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and throwing a career-high 104 pitches.
He had finally been starting to turn things around after a rough start to the season. After giving up an 8.05 ERA in his first four starts, Maeda had a 2.21 ERA in his next three outings, all of which resulted in Dodger wins.
Writer’s Prediction
Wacha outduels the rusty Maeda as the Cardinals (+136) get the series-clinching win.
