Betting on the Tennessee Titans (+4.5)
The Tennessee Titans returned to winning ways on Thursday with a convincing 36-22 victory over the reeling Jacksonville Jaguars. It was a huge bounce-back win for the Titans, who suffered a gut-wrenching 34-26 defeat to Indianapolis the previous weekend. With the victory, the Titans improved to 4-4 and moved to within a game of Houston Texans for the AFC South lead.
Key to the Titans’ victory was their much-improved play on the offensive end. After failing to record more than 30 points in any of their first seven outings, Tennessee finally got its act together against one of the league’s worst defenses in Jacksonville. The Titans recorded season-highs in total yards (494) and points (36) in the win against the Jaguars. Marcus Mariota proved to be Jacksonville’s tormentor once again, going 18 of 22 for 270 yards and two touchdowns. His 148.1 passer rating was the second-highest of his career.
The Titans will look to sustain the momentum of that huge win when they lock horns with the Chargers this coming weekend. Mariota will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing a San Diego secondary that’s allowing 275.1 yards per game through the air season, ninth-worst in the NFL. Apart from Mariota, the Titans also need DeMarco Murray to continue his excellent play against San Diego. The NFL’s 2014 offensive player of the year was in terrific form in the win against Jacksonville, rushing for 123 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Murray is second in the league in the rushing this season, averaging 94.5 yards per game on the ground this campaign.
The Titans are 3-7 SU and ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the San Diego Chargers (-4.5)
The San Diego Chargers had their two-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a gut-wrenching 27-19 loss to the Denver Broncos. It was a disappointing defeat for the Chargers who dropped down to 3-5 in the team standings. They are now three games behind the Broncos and Oakland Raiders in the AFC West title race.
The Chargers will look to get their season back on track when they lock horns with the Titans this coming weekend. For San Diego to record the much-needed victory against Tennessee, it needs to execute much better on the offensive end. The Chargers committed three turnovers in the loss to the Broncos. Philip Rivers accounted for all of those miscues, throwing three costly interceptions against Denver. He struggled mightily in that ballgame, completing just 20 of 47 passes for 267 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Rivers will need San Diego’s offensive line to perform much better this weekend against Tennessee. They didn’t offer him enough protection in the loss to the Broncos as he was hit a whopping 17 times and sacked four times. The O-line’s poor display didn’t deter Melvin Gordon from producing huge numbers once again for the Chargers. He rushed for more than 100 yards for the second time this season, finishing with 111 yards on 23 carries against the Broncos. It’s the first time a runner has rushed for more than 100 yards against Denver’s vaunted defense in 22 outings.
That being said, the Chargers will fancy their chances in this contest as they have fared extremely well against the Titans at home of late. The Chargers have won each of their last six home meetings with the Titans. They have covered the spread in five of those six games.
The Chargers are 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 home games.
