Betting on the Texas Tech Raiders (+12)

Record: 11-3 Overall / 1-1 Conference

The Red Raiders got themselves a huge win last Saturday, as they beat the Kansas Jayhawks at home, 75-57. Texas Tech defeating the no. 6 team in the nation made up for the Red Raiders’ 51-47 loss in Stillwater to no. 11 Iowa State Cyclones on Jan. 5. What’s even more impressive is that Texas Tech beat the Jayhawks without the Red Raiders’ top two scorers in Terrence Shannon Jr. and Kevin McCullar due to lingering injuries. The Red Raiders are winning games mostly on the strength of their defense that also held Kansas to only 44.7 percent shooting. In fact, they are eighth in the nation with just 58.3 points allowed per game and 10th with an opponents’ shooting percentage of 37.6. Although they are 59th nationally in scoring, it’s only largely because they like to play slow (308th in adjusted tempo). The statuses of Shannon and McCullar are still up in the air, as of writing, but as long as Texas Tech’s defense holds, it should have a shot at beating Baylor.

Texas Tech is 3-1 against the spread in its last four games overall.

Betting on the Baylor Bears (-12)

Record: 15-0 Overall / 3-0 Conference

Baylor maintained its spotless record this season after taking down the TCU Horned Frogs on the road last Saturday, 76-64. The Bears’ offense was like a house on fire in that game, as they shot 52.6 percent from the field and 48.1 percent from behind the arc. Adam Flagler led Baylor with 22 points and a 6/10 shooting from deep. Baylor has a well-balanced game, with an offense that is fourth nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency and a defense that’s seven in adjusted defensive efficiency. The Bears are also 10th in effective field goal percentage and 11th in field goal percentage. Finding a weak spot on the Bears’ armor is one thing, and it’s another to exploit it. It’s as though Baylor is truly built to win it all – again. That said, the Bears will have to be better in defending inside the arc, as they are just 10th in the Big 12 in opponents’ shooting percentage on 2-pointers.

Baylor is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 games as the home team.

Writer’s Prediction

Baylor wins, 75-65.
