Betting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (odds)
Record: 17-8 Overall / 9-7 Conference
The Red Raiders are headed to a huge rematch against Baylor on the heels of a nice unbeaten streak. Mac McClung and company have won all their last three games, the latest being their 81-54 demolition job of the Iowa State Cyclones last Thursday. Texas Tech was expected to destroy the Cyclones and the Red Raiders showed that further by covering the 17.5-point home spread as favorites. Winning over the Cyclones doesn’t move the needle all that much for Texas Tech’s March Madness resume but it gives them added confidence ahead of the Baylor game. Texas Tech lost to the Bears back on Jan. 16, 68-60 as a 4-point home underdog, with McClung scoring 24 points on 8-of-18 shooting. The Red Raiders shot just 35.5 percent in that game, which was frustrating because they had 18 offensive rebounds to just 12 by Baylor. The Red Raiders’ offensive rebounding poses a big threat to Baylor nevertheless. The Red Raiders are 31st in the nation with a 33.6 offensive rebounding percentage. Marcus Santos-Silva, who had seven offensive boards in the loss to Baylor, is 23rd in Division I basketball with a 14.5 OR%.
The over is 5-2 in Texas Tech’s last seven road games.
Betting on the Baylor Bears (odds)
Record: 20-1 Overall / 12-1 Conference
Baylor gets further away from its recent upset 71-58 upset loss at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence on Feb. 27, as the Bears have now collected two wins in a row since. The Bears beat the West Virginia Mountaineers in a nail-biter in Morgantown, 94-89, last Tuesday before humbling Cade Cunningham and the Oklahoma State Cowboys at home on Thursday, 81-70, almost covering the spread as 12-point faves. The trio of Davion Mitchell, MaCio Teague, and Jared Butler was too much for Oklahoma State. Mitchell had 19 points, while Teague and Butler had 22 and 30 points, respectively. Those three are going to be headaches for the Red Raiders, especially with Butler looking like he’s on the groove. Butler only had seven points on a salty 2-of-11 shooting in the win against Texas Tech, but has now scored 55 points and made 9 of 18 shots from deep over the last two Baylor games,
Baylor is 2-1 against the spread in its last three home games against Texas Tech.
Writer’s Prediction
Baylor wins, 78-68.
