Betting on the Villanova Wildcats (odds)
Record: 10-1 Overall / 5-0 Conference
The winning ways continue for Villanova, which extended its unbeaten streak to eight games following a decisive 71-56 home win over the Providence Friars on the road on Jan. 23. Unlike in their previous wins though, the Wildcats didn’t shoot well against Providence, which held Villanova down to only 38.1 percent shooting from the floor and 28.0 percent (7-25) from behind the arc. Villanova’s offense is among the best and most efficient in the nation. It is fourth nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency with 119.8 points per 100 possessions and also tops in Big East play with a 38.0 3-point shooting percentage. Villanova hopes to recover its usually deadly shooting touch against Seton Hall, which the Wildcats defeated on Jan. 19 at home, 76-74. In that game, Villanova was led by Collin Gillespie, who had 22 points, while Jermaine Samuels came off the bench and fired 20 points. Villanova also played that game after a 27-game absence after self-imposed temporary exile from basketball due to COVID-19 issues. With all the rusts from a long layoff shaken off, expect the Wildcats to be better all-around in this rematch against Seton Hall.
Villanova is 4-1 against the spread in its last five road games.
Betting on the Seton Hall Pirates (odds)
Record: 9-7 Overall / 6-4 Conference
It’s been rough sailing of late for Seton Hall. After defeating the DePaul Blue Demons on the road on Jan. 9, 76-68, the Pirates got sunk by Villanova and most recently, Creighton Bluejays at home on Jan. 27, 85-81. Despite those losses, it can’t be said that the Pirates dropped their last two assignments because of poor shooting, as they have shot 55 percent from the field against Villanova and 49 percent against Creighton while nailing 17 of 45 shots from deep over that two-game stretch. Myles Cale top-scored for the Pirates against Creighton, as he came away with 20 points to go with nine rebounds. Meanwhile, Sandro Mamukelashvili scored only 11 points, way below his team-leading average of 17.9 points per game. Mamukelashvili can pick himself up against Villanova, which saw him drop 23 points to go with nine rebounds and five assists in the first meeting between these two teams. Seton Hall is scoring 75.2 points per game this season while giving up 72.2 per contest.
Seton Hall is 5-5 against the spread in its last 10 games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
