The Golden State Warriors are on the home stretch of their regular season and are three losses away from a tie with the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. This of course means that they are also two losses (or less) away from the best team record in NBA history. So this brings us to our year-long prop:
Will they win 73 games or more this season? Or will they win 72 or less?
That record setting Bulls team featured Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman (among many other amazing players) and dropped a 72-10 record on the league. They’d then go on to win the NBA Championship later that year. Now we’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves just yet about the Warriors taking the title, we just want to know if you think they’ll beat the single season record? Who are the biggest threats to their 73-win mark?
San Antonio Spurs
San Antonio took out Golden State in their last meeting 87-79. The win gave the Spurs a 3-2 edge in the season series. However, there are still two more meetings to go between the Western Conference juggernauts. On April 7th, the Spurs will head West. While on April 10, the Warriors will board a plane to Texas.
These are winnable games for the yellow and blue, but Golden State needs to sustain pressure throughout the entire tilt. When they take their foot off the gas, we all know what can happen.
The Spurs are too strong and too deep. When they see a window, they take it. They’re a veteran team that knows precisely when to strike. Without a doubt, they’re Golden State’s biggest record threat moving forward.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers meet the Warriors on Sunday, April 3rd in California. The two teams are 1-1 on the season and the Blazers currently hold the largest deficit defeat of Golden State this season in their 137-105 win. Their 32-point victory on February 19th didn’t deter Warrior fans, but it definitely cemented what a lot of people were thinking; “Does this team ever get tired?”
The answer is yes, yes they do. They lost to Portland by 32 but then went on a seven game winning tear commencing the following night against the heavy hitting Los Angeles Clippers.
Before they Warriors meet the Spurs, they’ll have to go through the Clippers, Celtics and Blazers. So the odds of three or more losses, are definitely high.
Writer’s Prediction
I’d love to continue the fairy tale. Golden State losses four more though to finish 69-11.
