2016 NCAA College Football Week 6 Expert Picks

Bleacher Report

MATCHUP PICK
Tennessee (+6.5) at Texas A&M Texas A&M, 31-21
LSU (-1) at Florida LSU, 17-14
Florida State (+2) at Miami Florida State, 30-17

Joseph Zucker from Bleacher Report chose three massive showdowns for his weekly column. The only upset that Zucker predicted was convincing win by the Seminoles over the Hurricanes, stating that Miami’s new head coach Mark Richt’s record against ranked opponents is quite a concern (14-23 for the past eight seasons with Georgia), and that Florida State can hang with Miami in terms of offensive production.

FSU’s star running back Dalvin Cook, who’s a solid +2,500 candidate to win the Heisman trophy this season, has gotten back to scorching earth after a slow start through the first three weeks. Cook had 246 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns against UNC last Saturday, as the ‘Noles lost to UNC by just a last-second 54-yard field goal. Meanwhile, the ‘Canes have yet to face a ranked opponent this year, and they could be in for a long afternoon against a desparate and hungry Florida State team.

Fox Sports

MATCHUP PICK
Virginia Tech (+2.5) at North Carolina North Carolina, 30-27
Tennessee (+7) at Texas A&M Texas A&M, 30-28
Alabama (-14) at Arkansas Alabama, 29-22
Florida State (+2) at Miami Miami, 30-28
LSU (-1) at Florida Florida, 25-24

The folks over at Fox Sports continue to make use of the WhatIfSports simulator for their weekly picks. Adam Meyer gathered this week’s results, and they were pretty interesting indeed.

Using our very own odds at TopBet above, the site’s simulator predicted that four out their five chosen games will have the underdogs cover the spread (Tennessee and Arkansas) or result in a push (Florida State and Florida). Even the three-point predicted win for favorite North Carolina is way too close for comfort against the spread, but that shouldn’t really be the case.

Even though the No. 25 Hokies are giving up just 18.8 points per game (49th in FBS), there’s too much offense coming from UNC’s barracks right now, particularly from junior QB Mitch Trubisky. As Meyer pointed out, Trubisky has yet to throw a pick this season, and he has thrown for at least 400 yards in each of his past four starts.

Athlon Sports

MATCHUP PICK MATCHUP PICK
LSU (-1) at Florida Florida, 20-17 Michigan (-27.5) at Rutgers Michigan, 51-14
Texas (+10.5) at Oklahoma Oklahoma, 38-24 Alabama (-14) at Arkansas Alabama, 31-17
Houston (-17) at Navy Houston, 48-24 Washington (-9) at Oregon Washington, 37-28
Virginia Tech (+2.5) at North Carolina North Carolina, 28-24 Florida State (+2) at Miami Miami, 31-28
Indiana (+29) at Ohio State Ohio State, 52-27 Arizona (+9.5) at Utah Utah, 31-24
Tennessee (+7) at Texas A&M Texas A&M, 34-31 Washington State (+7.5) at Stanford Stanford, 27-24

Not every top-25 team will see action against an elite opponent, but that doesn’t mean that the likes of the Houston Cougars and the Michigan Wolverines (as Athlon Sports’ Rob Doster would attest) will cover their respective, huge double-digit spreads against cannon-fodder programs.

The Cougars have been on a rampage since their 10-point Week 1 win over Oklahoma, as they’re currently ranked third in the nation at allowing just 11.2 points per contest and winning by an average of 30 points per game to date. On the other hand, the Navy Midshipmen are coming off a stinging loss to long-time rival Air Force; a team they’ve beaten six out of nine times prior to last Saturday’s 28-14 defeat.

As for the Wolverines, they’re just as tenacious on D as Houston is, but they have an equally frightening offense to boot at that. Michigan is ranked sixth in the country at just 12.4 points allowed per game, all the while putting up the tenth-most points this season with a massive 44.4 points-per-game average thus far. Jim Harbaugh and his boys might have their way all afternoon once more, as they’ll take on a Rutgers team that just got ridiculously blanked by Ohio State this past Saturday, 58-0.
