Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (33-21)

Moneyline: -113

The Dodgers bats finally fell back down to earth as they could only put one run past Carlos Martinez in last night’s 2-1 defeat to the Cardinals. LA had averaged 6.5 runs over their previous six games—all wins. Despite the loss, they’re still an impressive 11-3 in their last 14 games.

The Dodgers will have the ideal pitcher on the mound in Brandon McCarthy to help them get back on track. The right-hander has been dealing over his last two starts. He’s gone six innings in each outing, giving up just five total hits and a single earned run. He had to exit his last start a little earlier due to some troublesome knee tendinitis, but that didn’t hinder him from throwing six shutout innings.

McCarthy is 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA in three career starts against the Cardinals. However, he’s gone at least six innings while giving up just one earned run in his last two starts against them. That includes last year’s no-decision, where he went 6.1 innings in a 4-3 Dodgers defeat.

Betting on the St. Louis Cardinals (25-25)

Moneyline: +103

The Cardinals got a much-needed win last night over the Dodgers to snap their three-game skid and climb back up to .500. However, the St. Louis offense is still a significant issue. They’ve now scored just 17 runs in their last seven games, and are unsurprisingly just 2-5 in those games.

Just like Carlos Martinez last night, the Cards will need some outstanding pitching to carry them if their offense continues to slump. Luckily for them, they have a good chance of getting just that from Adam Wainwright, who is just dealing at the moment. The veteran right-hander has given up just one earned run in 20.1 innings over his last three starts.

Wainwright hasn’t faced the Dodgers since 2014, when he won despite giving up six earned runs in just 4.1 innings. However, his previous three starts were all defeats as the Cards scored a total of just two runs in those three games.

Writer’s Prediction

The Dodger bats (-113) bounce back to beat Wainwright and the Cards, 6-2.
