Betting on the San Francisco Giants (24-35)

Moneyline: +115

Matt Cain hasn’t had a win in each of last three starts and he’ll look to right the ship when he gets the mound call in Game 2 of this four-game series. Cain is 0-3 with a 5.71 ERA during that stretch. On the season, the 12-year vet is 3-4 with a 4.53 ERA.

Cain’s best days are clearly behind him and facing a dangerous Milwaukee offense doesn’t bode well. That said, Cain could still twirl out a gem or two. Back in April 24, he tamed the Los Angeles Dodgers by tossing six scoreless innings in a 2-1 home victory. More recently, he faced the same Dodgers on May 15, tossing 5.1 innings of one-run ball in an 8-4 win again at home.

Cain will be dueling with Chase Anderson, who has seen the Giants plenty of times before, having spent two seasons in Arizona. Anderson has had trouble facing the Giants. He is 1-2 with an 8.15 ERA in four starts versus San Francisco. Buster Posey is 4-for-9 with a double in his career against Anderson. Denard Span is 3-for-4 with a homer in the same matchup.

The total has gone under in Cain’s last two starts.

Betting on the Milwaukee Brewers (30-28)

Moneyline: -125

For sure, the Brewers are aware of Matt Cain’s road struggles this season. Trips away from the AT&T Park bring out the worst in Cain, who is 0-2 with a dizzying 8.28 ERA in five road starts thus far this year.

Ryan Braun’s bat appears to be Cain’s biggest concern heading into the matchup. Braun is 10-for-27 with a homer and six RBI in his career against the Giants’ righty. Aside from Braun, Cain will also be staring across the mound Eric Thames, who paces the team with 15 home runs to go with a triple slash line of .272/.411/.601.

Chase Anderson is 4-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 11 starts so far. He’s been exceptional in his previous two starts, giving up zero runs on four total hits and 18 strikeouts in 14 innings combined in wins over the New York Mets (2-1) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (6-1).

The over is 6-4 in Anderson’s last 10 starts.

Writer’s Prediction

Milwaukee (-125) wins, 6-2.
