Betting on the New Orleans Saints (+135)
The Saints bowed to the Cleveland Browns this past Thursday, 20-14, for their 10th-straight preseason defeat. It was awful pass blocking that sealed the loss, as Ryan Nassib got strip sacked by two rushers.
Nassib, along with co-backup Garrett Grayson, played well for New Orleans. Both passed for over 100 yards and collectively made 70 percent of their throws (21-for-30), with the former also tossing one touchdown.
Tommylee Lewis proved to be the Saints’ most reliable weapon for the game (and possibly the whole preseason), as he lit up the Browns secondary, catching 10 of 11 passes for 124 yards and a TD. His performance was a key in making the team be on pace for most of the game, as the backfield only made minimal presence – 25 rushes for 82 yards (3.2 yards per carry). Rookie running back Alvin Kamara, however, was notable enough, as he gained 35 on the ground in just four runs.
The defense will have to be a couple of notches better. They just gave up 184 yards to rookie QB DeShone Kizer, and will now be pitted against the always-aggressive offense of the Chargers.
Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (-155)
It was an awful debut for the newly-relocated Los Angeles Chargers this past Sunday, as they got wrecked by the Seattle Seahawks at home, 48-17. The opening frame was competitive, but the last three quarters saw them get outscored 38-3.
Four quarterbacks threw for the Bolts, and none completed more than four (15-for-31 in total). Kellen Clemens had the most action, as he was 4-for-10 for 100 yards, which was mainly due to his 75-yard TD connection with Travis Benjamin. Benjamin, however, only had a pair of catches, and no receiver had more than that.
The ground attack was non-existent, so much so that QB Cardale Jones was the team’s leading rusher for the game – two carries for 18 yards.
Improvement is also needed on defense, as it only registered six quarterback hits and two sacks last week, while also allowing the opposing QB to connect on 22 of his 28 passes for 325 yards.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chargers (-3) bounce back, 24-20.
