Betting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (-1)
Record: 18-10 Overall / 9-8 Conference
Texas Tech got a scare in the first round, but dug dig enough and showed poise to eke out a 65-53 win over the Utah State Aggies. The Red Raiders’ defense was all over Utah State, especially in a frenetic second half. Texas Tech forced the Aggies to turn the ball over 22 times, while Mac McClung relished his first NCAA Tournament game by scoring 16 points, albeit on a salty 6-of-16 shooting from the field. Texas Tech’s high-pressure defense can keep the team afloat whenever the Red Raiders’ offense flounders just like in the first round and could wreak havoc again this Sunday against the error-prone Arkansas team. The Razorbacks entered the tournament 176th in the nation with 13.1 turnovers per game and 83rd with a 15.0turnover percentage. Texas Tech is third nationally with a 13.3 defensive non-steal turnover percentage.
Texas Tech is 4-2 against the spread in its last six games overall.
Betting on the Arkansas Razorbacks (+1)
Record: 23-6 Overall / 13-4 Conference
Arkansas battled back from a double-digit deficit and avoided an early exit in the NCAA Tournament, as the Razorbacks brushed aside the Colgate Raiders in the first round in an 85-68 win. The Razorbacks aren’t particularly known for their sticky defense, but the win over Colgate showed that they are capable of turning the tide towards their favor with great defensive effort. Colgate shot just 39.7 percent from the field and lost control of the ball 22 times. Arkansas is averaging 82.4 points per game and 111.5 points per 100 possessions, though the Razorbacks can expect to see limited touches in this game due to Texas Tech’s deliberate style of basketball that ranks among the slowest in Division I.
Arkansas is 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 games overall. The under is 3-0 in the Razorbacks’ last three outings.
Writer’s Prediction
Texas Tech wins, 74-71.
