Top MLB Free Agents on 2018
PITCHERS
Yu Darvish
Despite not being one of the top-tier pitchers today and also being on the post-years of his Tommy John surgery, Yu Darvish is still going to gather a good list of suitors once free agency comes, thanks in large part to his good built (6’5, 220 lbs.), which is beyond the average for a pitcher.
Since returning from that dreaded surgery last season (39 starts), Darvish has allowed two runs or less 19 times, so he’ll be regarded by plenty of general managers as a starter who can come and provide great work.
Jake Arrieta
Jake Arrieta will be on the same boat that Darvish is by early or mid November. Although his play this 2017 has been underwhelming for the most part – 10-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 21 starts – he will get several calls from other teams simply because he became a key part of a championship team and is now a veteran of the game.
That, along with the variety of pitches he can throw (four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, changeup, curveball, slider/cutter,), will be among the things that GMs will be salivating about.
Johnny Cueto
He’ll be third pitcher on that boat with Darvish and Arrieta, as he is also a certified vet, who, despite his off year (6-7, 4.59 ERA), will still be able to offer teams many assets. His ability to throw various types of pitches (fastballs, curveballs, etc.) and confuse batters with his ever changing wind up are skills that many teams will easily welcome.
Along with being a 2015 World Series champion (with the Kansas City Royals), Cueto is also a two-time All-Star and a one-time strikeout leader of the National League.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Alex Cobb, Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, Greg Holland
BATTERS
Eric Hosmer
The Royals’ star slugger should be excited to hit the free agency market. He’s young (28 by October), he still has upside left, and he’s having a big year stat-wise (career-highs in batting average and on-base percentage) – basically every ingredient a batter would need for a huge payday.
Mike Moustakas
As one of Hosmer’s main partners in crime, Mike Moustakas will also head towards an exciting free agency period, because like his teammate, he has everything going for him to market himself into a good contract.
Moose has 29 dingers as of this writing, making him very much on-pace to hit 40 or more, which if he does, will be an added reason to get paid.
Logan Morrison
Logan Morrison has always been a nice enough player for the clubs he has played in, but his production this 2017 just came out of nowhere (26 homers). He exceeded his career-high in total homers way before the halfway mark of the season, and he’s also tallying one of the best slugging and on-base percentages of his career.
It should be enough to get him dozens of calls from everywhere in the league.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Yonder Alonso, Lucas Duda, Jay Bruce, JD Martinez, Mitch Moreland.
