NFL Week 9 wraps up on Monday night with a highly anticipated NFC North rivalry between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers on Lambeau Field. The Lions have lost the last three meetings on the road against Green Bay, and while the game opened as a pick ’em this week, it was bet up slightly to favor the Detroit Lions by 2-points.

Betting on the Detroit Lions (3-4)
Three of the Lions four losses have been by less than a TD so they could easily be a lot better in terms of won-loss record. All three of those losses were to two teams that seem like they might make the playoffs too so perhaps this Lions group is alright. The Lions do need to run the ball better though. They are 28th in the league thanks to a slew of injuries along the offensive line and no back really emerging.
They are a rare team where teams might dare them to run. Matthew Stafford is one of the better arm talent around still, even if he is not surrounded by elite receiving weapons. Golden Tate is a really good number two but if he is your top target you are going to struggle in those situations you have to make a play. He is not physically gifted enough.
The Detroit defense is not going to wow anybody. They are solid against the run but have difficulty against the pass. That dichotomy would have normally been death against Green Bay but with Aaron Rodgers out significantly less so. Against a struggling QB the defense does not have to be overly aggressive and that should suit this mediocre group just fine.
Betting on the Green Bay Packers (4-3)
The Packers still have to get through 6 more games before Rodgers can come back. The question is whether they will still be in a position to do anything when he does, making this game an important one.
So far all that Brett Hundley has proven is that he is a nice athlete. I thought he would be further along given this is his third season in the league. The running game may have found its answer in rookie Aaron Jones. He has 2 120+ yard games already and is truly running with the opportunity.
All season long the passing game has been a little off. They really need to figure out how to play to Hundley’s strengths and hope it is enough. Green Bay has always succeeded with a defense that is just good enough. This season they are going to have to be better than that but I am not seeing a lot of reasons to expect that. If they are going to make it through the next several weeks they are going to need a few games where this group comes through. The schedule is not terrible over the next month.
Writer’s Prediction:
I was all set to go with the Packers as a home dog then I remembered why they are in that situation. Hundley and a mediocre defense. I think that Green Bay will find ways to get more out of Hundley but there is only so much you can do. He just doesn’t look comfortable out there.. Pick: Lions (-2.5)
