Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (+6.5)
Week 10 saw the Jaguars lose again, and their chances of making it to the playoffs are getting dimmer and dimmer. Losing 24-21 to Houston on Sunday didn’t just extend the Jaguars’ skid to four games but also highlighted one the team’s biggest problems this year: taking care of the ball.
The Jaguars committed two errors against Houston and both were charged to quarterback Blake Bortles, who threw a pick six and lost one of his two fumbles. Bortles is the last one the Jaguars would like to see mess up and until he cleans his act, the Jaguars are going to run into trouble. Hopefully he does against Detroit, especially with Allen Robinson coming off a huge game. Robinson caught nine passes for a season-high 107 yards to go with a touchdown in the loss to Houston. The Lions’ pass defense isn’t that imposing, ranking just 19th in passing yards allowed and has just four interceptions on the season.
Jacksonville’s defense can be pretty stingy and it should pose problems for the Lions, who might find scoring inside the end zone harder than usual. The Jaguars are fifth in the NFL in red zone touchdown defense with opponents.
The Jags are 2-1 ATS in its last three road games.
Betting on the Detroit Lions (-6.5)
Even on a bye week, the Lions are winning. After beating Minnesota in Week 9, the resting Lions saw the Vikings lose to Washington the following week, thus handing Detroit the lead in the NFC North. The Lions will look to strengthen their hold of the division’s top spot as they host the careening Jacksonville squad this coming Sunday.
It’s a tasty home matchup for Detroit, as the Lions are 3-0 SU and ATS in their last three at Ford Field and that streak is likely to extend to four given how bad the Jags have been playing this season. This isn’t going to be a walk in the park for the Lions, however, with the Jaguars presenting an offense that could trouble Detroit’s mediocre stop unit. That said, the Jaguars have the history of imploding on offense so Detroit’s defense must be able to capitalize every time the Jacksonville soil its pants on the field.
Matthew Stafford passed for 219 yards with two touchdowns and an interception on 23 of 36 completions. He’s getting Jacksonville’s stout pass defense that allows just 217.6 passing yards per game so expect more handoffs to Detroit’s running backs. After all, Jacksonville is just 24th against the run in the league.
Writer’s Prediction
